Baby Sea Turtles at theReef!

It’s turtle nesting season in the Cayman Islands and theReef Resort is proud to introduce our first hatchlings of the season. Miss Mary’s nest  sprang to life on July 5th with 80 t0 90 baby sea turtles making an appearance late in the afternoon. It’s quite rare that turtles hatch during the day so this was a real treat for all our staff members and guests who had a chance to get an up close and personal look at these amazing creatures.

A large plastic barrier placed over the nest by members of the Department of Environment prevented the babies from wandering away and safe from danger until staff and guests were able to release the little ones into the Caribbean later in the evening.

The Reef Recognized as a Top All Inclusive Resort

The Reef is a Top All-Inclusive Resort, and now it’s official on Away.com’s list posted last week. Among 29 resorts listed, The Reef stands out as the only Cayman Islands resort.

Beach2 (Large)

Away.comwriter Lena Katz explains that The Reef’s East End location makes for a laid-back atmosphere, saving guests from the cruise-ship crowds that occasionally flood the west side of the island. She doesn’t forget to mention The Reef’s 1,600-foot stretch of white sand, the largest of any resort beach on the island, and that all 152 condo-style rooms are beachfront, with a patio or balcony just inches away from the sand and sea.

The Reef’s Deluxe All-Inclusive package includes meals, premium drinks, up to an hour rental from the famous White Sand Water Sports team, plus snorkeling gear your entire stay. We also have slimmed-down all-inclusive options now, that you can view here.

The list includes Caribbean, Central America and North America locations. The Reef is among 14 Caribbean resorts that make the cut.

Electric Cars in Grand Cayman?!

YES, that’s right, the next time you are in Grand Cayman, you may very well be driving an electric car! Yesterday, the first solar panel charging station was unveiled at Governors Square, Grand Cayman, and theReef is please to announce that we have signed up to be one of the charging station locations too!

The man behind the drive for electric vehicles in Cayman (no pun intended!), is Mr. John Felder. Mr. Felder has been working on this project in Cayman for six years and earlier this year he sold the first electric vehicle, a Chevy Volt, to Caribbean Utilities Company (CUC). These charging stations are the first of its kind in the Caribbean and theReef is very proud to support this innovative green movement.

At the moment 14 solar panel chargers are planned for Grand Cayman, including the station at theReef. The chargers have wind-resistant solar panels which will form a canopy over the car (bonus your car is kept shaded too). Surplus energy will also be fed back into Cayman’s national grid.

You can read more about Mr. John Felder’s plans for electric cars in Cayman here.

Get a Taste of the Caribbean this weekend…

The Reef resort is proud to be participating in Montreal’s 12th annual Taste of the Caribbean festival tomorrow, June 18. The festival attracts tens of thousands of people to experience the eats, sights, smells and sounds of the Caribbean.

An auction will be held to raise funds for culinary scholarships for underprivileged youth through the “Triumph Through Adversity” program. In the auction, The Reef will be donating a five-night stay in a one bedroom executive suite. image0031

“Triumph Through Adversity” helps disenfranchised youth develop culinary skills that will empower them to learn, help them build productive lives and integrate them into Montreal’s community. We have our fingers crossed at The Reef that this will be a high-bidding item and raise significant funds for this wonderful program.

The event features high quality cuisine from many Caribbean chefs and destinations. After you eat, enjoy live music, island dance lessons, art, mini golf and even a casino for charity. And don’t forget to make it to the live auction to bid for a trip to The Reef!

If you are in the Montreal area, join the Taste of the Caribbean in the heart of Old Montreal from 3 to 12 a.m. for general admissions, 1:30 to 12 a.m. for VIP.

Tickets are available for general admission, $50, children tickets are $17, and $125 for VIP.

Visit http://www.atasteofthecaribbean.ca/festival.html or http://www.totc-festival.com for more information on this event.

barefoot

Innovation: the art of introducing something new.

theReef has always been at the forefront of innovation, especially in Grand Cayman. Even when we built the resort we were one step ahead of the game and constructed ALL beachfront suites, the only resort in Grand Cayman with all beachfront suites! WOW! theReef is also the ONLY place on Grand Cayman where you can see the infamous Barefoot Man! WOW!

You have already seen our ‘Best Beach Rate Guarantee’ where you get the Lowest Published Internet Rate for The Reef Resort, ONLY at theReef.com. If you find a lower total rate on the Internet for the same room type, dates and length of stay, contact us, we’ll match the rate, AND add a $50 Resort Credit towards drinks and dining at our renowned beach bar or our restaurant during your stay!

Now theReef resort is on another mission to be the innovator when it comes to best price guarantees. Our ‘Barefoot Beachfront Guarantee’ takes our ‘Best Beach Rate Guarantee’ one step further. Should you find a beachfront room at a full service resort anywhere in Grand Cayman during Winter 2010 for a lower price, theReef will match it. We are so confidence in this offer, we will throw in free dinner for two with entertainment by the legendry Barefoot Man, who continues to play exclusively at The Reef, his Cayman home. Our ‘Barefoot Beachfront Guarantee’ definitely has the WOW factor!

Terms & Conditions:
• Must show that room rate is lower and is bookable online at the time of reservation request
• Room must be comparable in terms of being beachfront on a natural white sand beach in a full service resort in Grand Cayman
• contact reservations@thereef.com or call 888-232-0541 for more information or to book the lowest price beachfront rooms in Grand Cayman

theReef is all about guarantees.. we guarantee it !

Although it is noted on our home page, it may have slipped some people’s notice that theReef is adding guarantees to make your vacation planning simpler.

Our latest guarantee is our “Barefoot Beachfront Guarantee“, which can be simply summarised as :

“theReef guarantees the lowest price for a beachfront room”

Of course there are one or two conditions…it would be unfair of customers to tweak a guarantee to compare our rates to those of resorts without full service amenities or a pristine beach like ours, after all :) …. but our focus is to make it simple for you to plan your vacation and know you are getting the best price for a beachfront room.. and don’t we all want a beachfront room ?

I think we have hit on something, as just the other day I received an email from TravelZoo that they sent out to hoteliers to encourage them in their marketing. Now, TravelZoo are well known for their eye-catching “Top20″ ads, and in fact we were impressed with their efforts when we used them for one such effort a while back, but this latest shows how the industry is going away from being straightforward with their pricing..just as theReef is giving you a guarantee of clear and simple pricing. I know which I prefer ! So, this from TravelZoo :

“People care about the view – lead in with an attractive rate, then offer upgrades to ocean view. 34% of our audience books an alternative deal once enticed leading to a much higher room rate than what was originally promoted.”

Can you say “bait and switch” ?

bait-and-switch

I’m not picking on TravelZoo here, this is an industry trend.. just warning you as the traveller to be warned.. and to be sure in the knowledge that at theReef you are guaranteed a beachfront room.. hey, ALL our rooms are beachfront, you can’t go wrong !

Bicycle Diaries

image003Bicycle Diaries is the musings of a cyclist, and a famed cyclist at that, David Byrne of the Talking Heads. The book is an off-beat, interesting read of an urban bicyclist who for more than 30 years rode a fold-up bike while at home and on tour. Byrne reflects on each destination from Istanbul to Buenos Aires and of course, American cities. He considers American cities car friendly not biking or walking friendly and for the most part he’s right.

Maybe we can get Byrne to visit The Reef Resort and participate in the Reefathlon, a bike friendly event that will take place this November 22. The first event was a smashing success and the second event has already attracted Peter Stetina, an up and coming cyclist with his eye on the Tour de France. Ok Byrne, you may want to come and share cycling stories with Stetina or bring a few books for a beachside book signing, as the resort is 100% beachfront.

For those interested in Byrne’s book, review it on Amazon.com and for those interested in the Reefathlon read more here; www.thereef.com/reefathlon.

Makes me want to get my bike out and go for a ride!

Simple “a new buzzword” for 2010

usat_logo2A new survey released today is touting “simple” as the new buzzword for 2010. The survey, reported by Bruce Horovitz, USA Today, also goes on to state that cheap prices will become a thing of the past while fewer parts, additive or ingredients will be the future.

Well this is no surprise for the folks at The Reef Resort, for the past three years, have been touting ‘simply’ as their mantra as the resort’s guests have repeatedly expressed their idea of a perfect vacation “simple relaxation”. That’s exactly what the management team and staff have been dishing-up to all guests, and it appears to be working just fine.

The resort not only offers-up a bevy of special package; Simply All Inclusive, Junior Simple Adventure package need we go on. The resort takes “simplicity” seriously and is dedicated to making the vacation experience as simple as possible from booking, hurricane guarantees, cancellation policies and more.

Top Pro to claim the $1000 Reefathlon prize!

peterWe are excited to announce that Peter Stetina has confirmed his entry to the November 22nd Reefathlon event, where he will be gunning for the $1000 prize for breaking the open course record.

Cayman cyclists are reminded that not only are we offering $1000 for breaking the open course record, but if the Cayman course record falls, the local record holder will also receive a special prize. Always seeking to motivate the top local cyclists, and by popular demand, the prize for breaking the local course record will be a) a one night VIP stay at The Reef, along with b) US$250 cash.

Peter will be staying at The Reef for the weekend on his own “beach bike break” and will take part in a relaxed and social group ride around the course at 3pm on Saturday November 21st, all Reefathlon guests and friends of cycling are invited to join in!

Check out www.reefathlon.com for event details, as well as Peter’s bio!

Barefoot Man – Always Exclusive to theReef, Grand Cayman!

Barefoot

Perhaps one of the Cayman Islands most famous export is the Barefoot Man’s music! Widely renowned for his daring lyrics, Barefoot is the biggest B to hit the island since Blackbeard and no visit to the island is complete without taking in Barefoot and his band.

Barefoot plays exclusively at theReef every Tuesday and some Thursdays. His full schedule can be found at http://www.thereef.com/en/thingsToDo/entertainmentSchedule.html

A Couples Retreat a Movie or Reality

couplesretreat-ps-2Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jon Faveau and the rest of the cast maybe onto something in Couples Retreat. Yes, it’s about a group of friends/couples who escape to an island, one couple for some much needed therapy and the others as a support system. The idea of the movie is sound, as travel is about escapism, reconnecting and frivolity. Where the movie goes astray is the “mandatory” classes as I am not sure of any resort that forces guests to participate in classes or any special events for that matter.

What I do like about what I’ve seen from viewing the trailers are the opportunities for each couple to experience activities that deviate from their normal routines. It’s fun to do something that you’ve never done, it stretches the soul and interjects creativity and of course, it’s always great buzz for cocktail parties or water cooler exchanges.

Couples go ahead and retreat, come as one or bring some couple friends, enjoy, relax, laugh and go ahead, do something out of the norm. Power snorkeling anybody?

Get Your Lance Armstrong on at the Reefathlon

DSC_0039Calling all Lance Armstrong wannabe’s to The Reef Resort, Grand Cayman for the first ever Reefathlon. Get geared-up for a 19-mile ride on the East End of the island, which is undiscovered and uncrowded, perfect for a hobbyist, a fierce competitor and/or a beginner seeking race experience. On the other hand, if you’re a cyclist looking to support the greater good, join us, as this race assists the Cayman Islands Cancer Society with a percentage of the proceeds being donated locally to help islanders fight and win.

Cyclists will race a 19-mile loop, of which 14-miles of the race are oceanfront and include a category three hill. Cyclists will enjoy jaw-dropping views of turquoise oceans, complete with breezes to keep you cool and challenged. There will also be many points-of-interest along the route, for a scenic and stimulating ride.

The Reef Resort, has successfully launched its non-motorized sports program and the Reefathlon is an extension of this program and a natural fit. Simplicity, adventure escapes, and green activities are the mantra of the resort and the Reefathlon supports this philosophy and allows guests to enjoy some of the best the island has to offer.

Grand Cayman’s East End, an undiscovered adventure

reefcay-bchchairs3Summer is disappearing and the dream of a summer vacation adventure is about to dissapear as well, or is it. Today is the day to book a tropical vacation as many beach resorts are offering huge discounts. If you are looking for a quick escape look to book a destination that has direct flights or is a short flight away to maximize vacation time. One of the most popular and accessible Caribbean getaways on the East Coast is Grand Cayman Island, a unique island offering guests a cosmopolitan stay on 7-mile beach, or an undiscovered adventure on the East End.

Please Google 7-mile beach as so many have written about this end of the island. This story takes you to the undiscovered East End, and a visit to The Reef Resort, a idyllic beachfront property located right smack on the beach. What makes the East End undiscovered? It’s far removed from the hustle and bustle of seven mile beach, the cruise ships don’t dock on this side of the island eliminating the swarms of day-tourists which equates to wide-open beaches, less crowded snorkeling, diving sites, restaurants and more. And, the East End has more of a local vibe, a visit to Vivine’s Kitchen, or the beaches at Rum Point, and resorts like The Reef, where locals gather at the bar to enjoy nightly entertainment, catch up on island life and sip a Caybrew, making the East End of the island very special place.

The Reef Resort understands its place and is offering a new summer adventure package, Simply Summer Adventure a five-night package bookable through December 18, blackout dates September 5-18, and is priced for two travelers in a studio suite. The package also offers a five-day snorkel rental, a five-day midsize car rental (insurance not included) a two-hour paddle board lesson, and a one-hour “power snorkeling” trip, and a Blue Iguana Tour at the Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park, (The Reef just adopted Tootsie, and yes, he is a Dustin Hoffman wannabe, he even has is own fan page on Facebook). Plus, the resort will donate $25 US for each package booked to help save these critically engendered species. Additional on-site activities include; bicycling, water polo, tennis, volleyball and more for a steal-of-a-deal of $290 a night including taxes. The Reef also offers adventure packages for families call 866 714-2309 or email reservations at reservations@thereef.com.

Of course, the thousands of families who have traveled to the resort already know what Forbes Traveler has recently reported, that The Reef Resort is one of the best family getaways. The resort is family friendly for so many reasons: its far removed from the hustle and bustle of 7 mile beach, it offers the longest stretch (1,600 sq.-ft.) of beach on Grand Cayman island, and every guestroom is beachfront. Add-in dozens of daily activities for families such as noon fish-feedings from the resort’s private pier, a new non-motorized sports program the whole family can enjoy, two pools, and nightly entertainment. Oh, and did we mention how affordable this Caribbean escape is for families?

The Reef Resort is a property that understands what a great family vacation is and delivers plenty of extras, is a great value, and provides kid-friendly activities that will have your family buzzing for months about their 2009 vacation.

Mother Nature just announced 2009 Hurricane Season

cdaf275e-120e-4e97-b0a9-34f5c9d4ee38hmediumIt’s like clockwork, Mother Nature just announced the 2009 hurricane season, and Tropical Storm Andres was the first tropical storm of the season brushing across Mexico’s Pacific coast.

The Reef Resort in Grand Cayman is in the Hurricane Belt, but more often than not, this season offers one of the calmest, most tranquil times of the whole year. It’s truly an Indian summer escape as summer vacations are a distant memory, the beaches less crowded and a native vibe takes hold again. The weather patterns that occasionally spawn a storm in the Atlantic and Caribbean also bring weeks of light, balmy southeasterly breezes, and calm seas, which are excellent for kite surfing, diving and snorkeling. Power snorkeling anyone?

The Reef also understands that guests will want to have some type of guarantee when traveling this time of the year, and is happy to offer a “Simply No Worries” guarantee, * which protects travelers for any cancellations prior to a trip. Guests holding a confirmed reservation who are unable to travel to The Reef because of the closing of the Grand Cayman airport or the resort have the following options:

  1. A full refund
  2. Re-booking free of charge with a one-category room upgrade on the next visit taken anytime before the end of the following year. (Valid for the summer/fall season, based on availability, some restrictions apply.)

In the unlikely event that the island does experience inclement weather and guests who are on a rental reservation and are evacuated for safety reasons or would like to depart early due to a potential hurricane threat, will be offered the option of either:

  1. A refund for their complete stay, including nights already stayed at the resort
  2. A refund for the remaining nights that were cut short from their vacation, plus a certificate good for the original amount of nights of their stay up to five room nights in our summer/fall season through the end of the following year, based on availability, some restrictions apply.

*Bookings made not with the Reef directly may be non-refundable and the Reef may not be able to reverse payment.

Power snorkeling – a new trend at The Reef Resort

Power snorkeling is all the rage at The Reef Resort. Adults and kids alike can’t get enough of this motorized snorkeling experience. “It fits with today’s tech savvy consumer”, states the folks from White Sands Sports, the onsite professional team that is providing the resort with its new non-motorized sports program. What makes this snorkel activity so popular is you still use traditional snorkel gear with a DVP (dive propulsion vehicle). Using the DVP allows snorkelers to propel through the water at a quicker pace seeing even more than one could on their own.

250px-nurse_sharkThe guys at White Sand make the experience simple and fun. Guests are taken to a secluded beach via bus about ¾ of a mile up the road. Everyone gets powered-up and then heads back down the coast stopping at the best snorkeling spots and fishing holes in the area. Remember, the East End is less disturbed so the clear turquoise waters and plentiful wildlife make it easy to spot nurse sharks, rays, turtles and other cool sea creatures. An hour later everyone is back at The Reef Resort, for a yummy Caribbean cocktail and an exhilarating exchange ensues about the many sea creatures spotted on the journey. The Power Snorkel excursions include transportation, all snorkel equipment, safety vest and a DPV unit. For a mere $40 it is a steal of a deal for this memorable experience.

Even the mama Loggerhead Turtle is on board with the non-motorized sports program as the resort’s new Ms. Green reports that The Reef does indeed have a turtle nest with hatchlings due in August.

No Jet Skies here! Yeah!

Book in advance as Power Snorkeling is hot and often sells out way in advance; conceirge@thereef.com.
